Tasmania is an island state separated from the Australian mainland by Bass Strait. It is the smallest state in the Commonwealth of Australia and lies between latitudes 40 degrees and 44 degrees south.

Distances

It is 315 kilometres (189 miles) west to east and 286 kilometres (175 miles) north to south and comparable in size to Scotland, West Virginia and Hokkaido.

The Tasmanian land mass covers an area of 68,331 square kilometres (26,376 square miles) and includes more than 300 offshore islands including Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean.

It has 5400 kilometres of coastline and numerous mountains the highest of which is Mt Ossa (1617 metres).

Population

Tasmania's population is approximately 500,000 with the capital Hobart home to more than 200,000 people. The other major population centres are Launceston (100,000), Burnie (21,000), and Devonport (26,000).

Political system

The Tasmanian Parliament is located in Hobart and consists of the House of Assembly (lower house) and the Legislative Council (upper house). All laws must receive royal ascent from the monarch's representative, the Governor of Tasmania.

Climate

Tasmania has a mild, temperate maritime climate, with four distinct seasons. Summers are mild, with any hot periods rarely lasting more than a few days. Winters are not excessively cold, especially compared to places at similar latitudes in the northern hemisphere.
