Events drive tourism economy, says O'Byrne
TOURISM Minister Michelle O'Byrne has announced an $8.8 million boost to tourism event spending.Ms O'Byrne said the additional funding would allow more events to be held in Tasmania, attracting tourists and stimulating the economy.
The funding would comprise $6million over four years to attract events to the state, including the Falls Festival, the V8 Supercars and the Australian Wooden Boat Festival. "Events have been wonderful for the growth of tourism and particularly good for growth in Northern Tasmania," Ms O'Byrne said. "We see events driving massive visitor numbers and expenditure." Ms O'Byrne said the funding also included $1.6 million over four years to continue the Winter of Festivals initiative, designed to attract tourists to Tasmania during the traditional off- peak period, and $1.2 million for the Tasmanian Convention Bureau to bid for a larger number of business events. "We know Tasmania is an attractive destination and we know we have a product people enjoy and get a good feeling from experiencing," Ms O'Byrne said. "What we need to do is create the impetus, that reason to come. Whether it be AFL football ... or a vintage car classic - they are the things that bring people to this state. "We also know that more than 60 per cent of our tourism market in a 12-month period is repeat visitation. So if we give visitors that taste through a conference, or an event like Festivale or the Taste of Tasmania in Hobart, they are likely to come back and visit Tasmania again." - LUKE SCOTT
